Treatment

Medication

Talisman Foundation provide government funded medication as prescribed by the psychiatrist. If a resident is prescribed privately by their own psychiatrist then this may be ordered and paid for by the individual or their clinic. Residents are supported to understand and learn their script and gain insight in to their medication. Residents see the psychiatrist regularly and any queries and side effects are addressed as they arise. Medication for physical health concerns such as diabetes or hypertension is provided for and treated at South Rand Hospital unless treated privately.

Insight

Residents at Talisman Foundation attend daily group workshops. Residents in all groups are supported to understand and manage their diagnosis. Coping strategies and techniques are taught and residents support each other through discussion and support groups.

Holistic Support

Residents are supported to improve their quality of life holistically. The groups provided aim to improve physical wellbeing, social skills, community skills, hygiene and environmental care, vocational skills and pursuing leisure and hobbies. Mental health problems can affect all areas of a persons life therefore Talisman focuses on the person as a whole. The foundation achieves this by offering a range of activities including sports, meditation and relaxation, health awareness, yoga, events, outings, family support, room inspections and practical help, bathing programs, eating programs, creative expression, art lessons, drama, work-like environmental training, CV writing, support to access work, study and learnerships.... the list goes on. Support is tailored to the individual so that the resident gets the support they need.

Goal Setting and Reviews

Each resident has an allocated facilitator who meets with them regularly to set and review goals. Goals are tailored around what the individual would like to achieve and broken down in to realistic and achievable steps. The foundation has supported people back in to employment, to independent living, to return to live with families, to study, to learnerships, to addressing hygiene concerns, to making and improving contact with family, to learn to drive and much much more.
