We had a gorgeous day in the sunshine to celebrate Easter. Thank you to The DA and Woolworths for donating over 800 eggs! We played games, danced and enjoyed the a day of fantastic weather! We wish all of our residents, their families and everyone a very happy Easter!
Talisman Foundation were honoured to unveil a plaque from The Democratic Alliance in loving memory of the victims of Life Esidimeni and a pledge to never again let the rights of mental health care users be denied. Musi Maimane, the leader of the DA, attended a tour of our facility along with the shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom and other DA members. Our residents took part in a project to create their own "River of Life". Rivers of Life are used as a narrative therapy tool and form of creative expression to look over your life and notice key events, themes and patterns. This is can be very important for our residents as many have been to hospital a number of times and so we hope to break this cycle by better understanding the circumstances in their lives that lead to admission. Every month we go outside and enjoy a good South African Braai. We play games, sports and enjoy arts and crafts. We started our volleyball practice for the year - we hope to find some competitors because we haven't played against another team in some time. Today we watched Silver Linings Playbook. A story about a former teacher, Pat, who has a mental health condition. Pat leaves a mental institution and moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. He meets a mysterious woman with problems of her own and they start an unusual relationship.
We had a wonderful day enjoying nature and relaxing at the park. We went to Gilooly's farm and played cards, fed the geese, walked around the lake and read our books. It was a relaxing and peaceful day - sometimes that's just what you need!
